Unraveling a Prehistoric Predator Chain: Fossil Reveals Shocking Multi-Species Meal Mystery in Ancient Australia
Cretaceous Ichthyosaur Fossil Found In Australia

Dinosaur Experiences AustraliaThe remains of the ichthyosaur, which had eaten a pterosaur not long before it died.

Those sentiments were seconded by fellow paleontologist Dean Lomax:

“It’s one of the clearest examples ever discovered of a three-tier predator interaction and offers an unprecedented snapshot of behaviour in Australia’s Cretaceous seas. This extraordinary fossil records a trophic interaction between a pterosaur eaten by an ichthyosaur that was then partly consumed by a giant pliosaur. It gives us direct evidence of behaviour in the Eromanga Sea [which once covered Queensland].”

Indeed, the fossils appear to capture a single violent moment from the age of the dinosaurs which, thanks to ocean mud and pure chance, was preserved in the Australian Outback for roughly 100 million years.

After reading about the stunning fossil that showed a pterosaur eaten by an ichthyosaur eaten by a pliosaur, look through this fascinating collection of dinosaur facts. Then, go inside the question of what exactly killed the dinosaurs.
