WASHINGTON—Marveling at how his American counterpart’s grasp of the difficult language had progressed, Chinese leader Xi Jinping told reporters Thursday that he was deeply impressed with how much President Donald Trump’s English had improved since the two last met. “He definitely isn’t fluent, and I doubt he’ll ever get there, but he’s truly come a long way from being unable to pronounce a single word intelligibly,” said Xi, adding that he couldn’t help but admire the confidence with which Trump now uttered rudimentary English sentences and estimating that the president had probably expanded his vocabulary to at least 100 words. “Of course, we certainly couldn’t carry on an actual conversation, as President Trump’s command of English grammar is still quite crude—I had to gently correct him a number of times—but that doesn’t negate all of his effort. I assume he’s been working with a tutor of some sort, and they deserve a lot of credit for helping him get further than I think anyone would’ve ever thought possible.” Xi went on to say that Trump’s comprehension of the language was still so poor that the Chinese delegation could use English to openly discuss sensitive issues in his presence without fear he would understand them.
