Ancient Turtle Figurines Unearthed in Turkish Cave Hint at Mysterious Prehistoric Culture Dating Back 16,500 Years
In later cultures, turtles came to represent values of longevity and resilience, but determining whether the prehistoric inhabitants near Ä°n Cave attributed similar symbolism to turtles will take more research.
Still, the dating of the figurines alone makes this a particularly important discovery. The period between 14,500 B.C.E. and 11,200 B.C.E. unfolded before the dawn of human agriculture and large settlements in the region. Instead, communities at the time were still predominantly hunter-gatherer groups.
Archaeological discoveries from this time period have increasingly revealed hunter-gatherers’ symbolic and ceremonial traditions, and the turtle figurines only add to this knowledge, providing researchers with a window into the rituals of people living in Anatolia during the late Ice Age.
The 25 turtle artifacts were transferred to the Bilecik Museum and Bilecik Åžeyh Edebali for further study, hopefully bringing researchers one step closer to revealing what their true purpose was many thousands of years ago.
