Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano released a message to the club’s staff after they were found guilty of 114 rule breaches connected to financial fair play.
City had faced 115 charges from the Premier League and earlier this month it was announced they’d been found guilty on 114 of them, which leaves the club in hot water for its activities between 2009 and 2018.
The punishments could be incredibly severe after City were found to have benefited financially by almost £1 billion via inflated revenues and reduced costs through a series of arrangements the Premier League described as a ‘sham’.
The club have continued to insist they’ve done nothing wrong, with Khaldoon al Mubarak releasing a statement saying City remain confident of proving they are innocent of the charges.
Now the club’s CEO Soriano has sent a message to City staff insisting the Premier League case was ‘based on a single false accusation’, but the main detail people focused on was him not appearing to blink for over three minutes.
In the three-and-a-half minutes where Soriano is staring right at the camera, there’s perhaps one instance where he might have blinked, just before the three-minute mark. Apart from that, it’s eyes open the whole time.
It’s led fans to question whether the video has been altered by AI to keep his eyes open at all times while he was claiming City had been the victims of a ‘Premier League conspiracy theory’.
As he started right into the camera, and our souls, he explained that City would be appealing the guilty verdicts, and said the opinion of the Premier League Commission being released was ‘negative to our interests’.
Soriano claimed to staff they had ‘irrefutable evidence’ and insisted they’d appeal with the intention of winning their case.
That might be what he said, but all people could focus on was how it looked like ‘bloke doesn’t blink’.

Some fans said the lack of blinking made them wonder ‘how legit this video actually is’.
Others suggested that Soriano was ‘not blinking because he is reading from a teleprompter’ without being accustomed to it, or that it looked like software which puts several takes together into one uninterrupted sequence might have been used.
Whatever the situation with Soriano’s unblinking gaze, the message from his mouth is that City continue to insist they’ve done no wrong and will continue to fight the charges.
With their appeal, the process could drag on for another lengthy period of time, but if the charges are upheld, possible sanctions could include fines, compensation, suspensions or even a recommendation that the club be expelled from the Premier League.

The Premier League’s statement
Speaking out on Manchester City being found guilty of 114 charges, a statement from the Premier League said the case against City was ‘the most significant’ in the competition’s history.
Richard Masters, Chief Executive of the Premier League, said: “The core decision establishes the facts of what happened at Manchester City during this period. It details how the club systematically broke Premier League Rules for nearly a decade.
“It also vindicates the Premier League’s decision to pursue this case against Manchester City. While the process to date has been both long and difficult, the League has remained determined that the facts be established independently.
“It is a key responsibility of the Premier League to ensure that the Rules, approved by the clubs themselves, are upheld to protect the integrity of the competition. It is paramount that the League remains competitive and fair for all clubs and for the fans. We take that role extremely seriously.
“This disciplinary case, and this decision, are the most significant in Premier League history. There are elements of the case that remain to be decided, including, importantly, what sanction must follow for these breaches.
“Now we have the Commission’s decision, we are committed to moving swiftly through the remainder of the process, to provide certainty for the League, our clubs and fans.”
